The National Political Controversies!
The National are back with some more political activism this week. An email has recently been sent to all recipients on their mailing list (me!) describing the issues and reasons for the upset concerning their concerts in Arizona booked for October. Part of the email reads as such:
“Finally, we’d like you to know that we’re concerned about the discriminatory legislation that has been passed into law in Arizona. We don’t feel it’s right to boycott playing in AZ as our fans had no say in passing SB 1070, but we do intend to donate a share of proceeds from the October Tucson and Tempe shows to Latino Justice PRLDEF in support of their civil rights work. You can learn more about this organization at www.latinojustice.org.”
Again The National are stepping up to the table and using the weight of their fame and fortune to try and put up a fight for what they believe. It’s also a much better way of showing concern than cancelling their concerts in Arizona. Most of their fans no doubt will also disagree with the laws given the Nationals lefty stand point on the political spectrum. It’s just like the Mr November campaign for Obama all over again.
I wish all Arizonians (is that a term?) a good time! Happy in the knowledge of the ‘fingers to the man’ nature of the event.
Keep it up National, Where’s the next gig venue? Guantanamo?
Here’s a tune from their latest Album ‘High Violet’ that came out in May
